An aerial view of London at sea in August 1942, with her Walrus being prepared for flight. By this date the 0.5in MGs have been removed and single 20mm Oerlikons positioned on B and X turrets; the other 20mm positions are, sided, in the bridge wings and two on the after superstructure, making eight in all. The Type 273 lantern can be seen just ahead of the mainmast.

HMS SHROPSHIRE

Modifications. Modernised along the lines of Devonshire in 1936-37, her AA armament was enhanced by the installation of four further 4in single mountings and two quad 0.5in MGs, with an additional HACS on the forward director platform. She received two 8-barrelled pom-poms in spring 1941. In early 1942 radar Type 281 for air warning, Type 273 for surface warning, Type 285 for fire control of the secondary armament and Type 282 for control of the close range AA armament were fitted, and the single 4in mountings were replaced by twin mountings; the close range AA defence was supplemented by single 20mm Oerlikon guns (she had ten by the end of the year). The aircraft facilities were removed in a 1942/43 refit, when the AA fit became seven twin and six single 20mm Oerlikons.

In June 1944 her torpedo tubes were removed and an additional 20mm Oerlikon gun fitted. Between April and May 1945, all the 20mm AA guns were replaced by thirteen single 40mm weapons, a surface warning radar Type 293 replaced the previous Type 273 and the Type 277 fire control radar for the main armament was replaced.
